Western Balkans: EU and NATO Must Act More Decisively

StatementDecember 20, 2025By Mag. Günther Fehlinger

The geopolitical situation in the Western Balkans requires faster action. Kosovo, and Bosnia-Herzegovina need clear perspectives for Euro-Atlantic integration.

The Western Balkans has been a region of instability for decades – and this is not due to the people there, but to the failure of the international community to offer clear perspectives.

Kosovo has made remarkable progress despite all adversities. It is time for the remaining EU member states to recognize the country and pave a clear path to NATO membership.

Bosnia-Herzegovina suffers from a dysfunctional political system created by the Dayton Agreement. The international community must demand and support reforms – not cement the status quo.

Serbia stands at a crossroads. The government in Belgrade must decide: Does it want to be part of the European family, or does it want to continue flirting with Moscow? The EU and NATO should offer clear incentives for the European path.

The time for strategic patience is over. Every year we ignore the Western Balkans is a year in which other actors – Russia, China – expand their influence.
