In an era of hybrid threats and territorial aggression, Europe cannot afford security policy gray zones. Austria must contribute its share.
The threat landscape in Europe has fundamentally changed. Hybrid attacks, disinformation, cyberattacks, and conventional military aggression have become the new reality. In this situation, no neutrality is possible – you are either part of the solution or part of the problem.
Austria has benefited for decades from the security that NATO guarantees in Europe without being a member itself. This "free rider" position is not only morally questionable but also strategically shortsighted.
What can Austria do?
- Conduct an honest debate about security policy
- Increase defense spending to an appropriate level
- Strengthen cooperation with NATO partners
- Consider NATO membership in the long term
The security of Europe is indivisible. Austria can no longer stand on the sidelines and hope that others will provide for its security.
